Frequently Asked Questions for Homeschool Umbrella

What Type of School is This?

Brightworth Academy is classified by the Tennessee Department of Education as a “Category IV Church-Related School” and is exempt from accreditation requirements per TCA 49-50-801.  Once you have registered and received acceptance from us, your student will become an enrollee of Brightworth Academy and your personal classroom/learning environment will become an extension of our program.

How Do I Get Started?

Our enrollment process is easy & straightforward! Just follow the few steps below to get started with us:

  • Please review and agree to abide by our program requirements and policies
  • Submit your education plan/curriculum for each student who is enrolling with us.
    • For assistance with K-8th planning, please click HERE.
    • For assistance with high school planning, please click HERE.
  • If your student is transferring from another school, please have contact information for your student’s previous school(s) on hand. This information will be required as part of the application process.
  • Please submit a copy of your student’s immunization records with your application. If you do not currently have a copy of your student’s records, please obtain and submit a copy to our records department at records@brightworthacademy.com within 30 days of registration. Click HERE if you need a MEDICAL or RELIGIOUS immunization exemption form.

When Can My Students Enroll?

We accept students for year-round enrollment!

    • Brightworth Academy is open for enrollment year round. You may enroll your student(s) for the current academic school year until (or on) May 1st of the current school year. Registration for the upcoming academic school year remains open throughout the current academic year.

What if My Child is Transferring from Another School?

We accept transfer students.

  • If your student is transferring from another school (public, private, online program, other umbrella program, or as a homeschool student registered with the county/district homeschool office), contact information from the previous school(s) will be required as part of the application process.
  • Upon receipt of Confirmation of Enrollment with us, you will be free to withdraw your student from their current school/program, and we will contact your student’s previous school/program to retrieve their academic records.

*A $50 transfer fee is applied for all high school students.

What if My Child Is Enrolling From a State That Does Not Require Homeschoolers to be Registered?

  • Students enrolled with Brightworth Academy must meet all of the compulsory attendance requirements for residents of the state of Tennessee. If you are enrolling students from a state other than Tennessee, or from a country other than the United States, you must independently research and satisfy all of the applicable homeschool requirements for your state or country of residence.
  • If you are enrolling a student from a state that does not require homeschoolers to be registered, you can enter a parent/guardian-generated transcript of courses already completed by your student in your online parent/guardian account (this is not mandatory for K-7th grade).  All courses for high school credit that have been completed by your student prior to enrollment must be entered within 30 days of enrollment with Brightworth Academy or additional processing fees may apply.

What if My Child is Transferring from Another School?

Yes, we accept transfer students!

  • If your child is transferring from another school (including private, public, online programs, a different umbrella program, or as a homeschool student registered with the county/district homeschool office), contact information from the previous school(s) will be required as part of the application process.
  • Once you receive a Confirmation of Enrollment from us, you will be able to unenroll your child from his/her current school, and we will contact your child’s previous school to retrieve their records.

What if My Child is Enrolling in a State that Does Not Require Homeschoolers to be Registered?

  • Students enrolled with Brightworth Academy must meet all of the compulsory attendance requirements for residents of the state of Tennessee. If you are enrolling students from a state other than Tennessee, or from a country other than the United States, you must independently research and satisfy all of the applicable homeschool requirements for your state or country of residence.

Are There Any Extra Fees in Addition to My Registration Fees?

  • There are two (2) circumstances in which additional fees are applied:
    • A $50 transfer fee is applied for all high school students (in addition to the standard registration fee) to add previous high school coursework to your Brightworth Academy Student Account. Previous coursework for K-8 students will also be kept on file, but there is no fee to add it to your Student Account, and you will not see this information displayed in your Student Account.
    • A $50 graduation fee is applied for all high school students at the time of graduation declaration (at the time of, or prior to, senior year registration). If the student is enrolled with Brightworth Academy for all (or part of) their freshman year, contiguously, through time of graduation, the graduation fee is $50; if your student enrolls in Brightworth Academy during subsequent high school years (10th-12th grade years), a graduation fee of $125 will be applied for the acquisition and input of high school transcript information and graduation preparation and planning.

  • Flexibility in curriculum to suit your individual student’s needs and learning style

  • Curriculum counseling and guidance with materials selections for your student(s)
  • Regular maintenance and reporting of all academic records to appropriate school districts (Tennessee ONLY)

What if My Student Plans to Transfer Back into Public or Private School?

  • If you/your student chooses a transfer to public or private school at a later date, placement testing may be required for the determination of grade level, and/or for high school students to receive credit for completed courses. Each school has their own academic policies and will make the determination of whether or not coursework/credits that were completed during the student’s previous schooling will be accepted.
  • Please submit your new school’s physical address and an official records request from them at records@brightworthacademy.com.  Upon receipt of this request, your student will be officially withdrawn from Brightworth Academy and their official records and transcripts will be sent to their new school. Please be sure all coursework, attendance, credits, and grades are current and accurate prior to submission of transcript/records requests.

How do I Withdraw My Student from Brightworth Academy?

  • Please submit an email request for withdrawal of your student(s), along with an official records request from their new school, to: records@brightworthacademy.com. Upon receipt of both emails, we will withdraw your student(s) from Brightworth Academy and forward the all records and official transcripts to their new school.

How Do I Develop My Student's Education Plan and Choose the Right Curriculum?

  • *Please note, while Brightworth Academy can provide guidance/assistance to parents/guardians with these selections, Brightworth Academy DOES NOT create or implement any part of the education plan or provide any textbooks/curriculum that you may choose for your student(s).

Does Brightworth Academy Require Standardized Testing?

  • No, we do not require any standardized testing.
  • If you live in the state of Tennessee, enrollment with Brightworth Academy provides legal educational covering, exempting your student(s) from state required standardized testing. If you reside outside of the state of Tennessee, please contact your local board of education to learn what homeschool requirements are in place for your state/country. You may review the website or contact HSLDA to familiarize yourself with applicable homeschool requirements pertaining to your area of residence.

What is the Deadline to Upload My Student's Grades?

    • Grades and attendance for each student must be submitted in your online parent/guardian portal account twice per academic school year; by January 15th for the fall semester and June 15th for the spring semester.

Do I Need to Submit any Homeschool Forms to My Local School Board in Tennessee?

      • No; we securely and confidentially maintain all education plans, attendance records, transcripts, and grades that are entered into your parent/guardian portal account each year and submit all required documentation to your local school district, on your behalf, at the conclusion of each academic school year. No further communication with or reporting to your school district is required on your part. Brightworth Academy records/attendance reporting on behalf of the student applies to Tennessee residents only.

How do I Upload my Courses and Grades?

    • Upon completion of registration and enrollment, you will be granted immediate access to our online parent/guardian portal. Here, you will be able to see all of your students, view and edit their courses, enter course grades, and print transcripts. Our advanced, user-friendly platform is compatible with most mobile devices, allowing you to log into your account from your phone, making this process as simple and streamlined as possible.

How do I Develop a High School Plan for My Student?

    • We can help! Please review our suggestions for high school plans HERE.
    • *Please note, Parents/guardians are responsible for translating their student’s education to date & on going curriculum and education plan into both traditional courses and grades for their high-school transcript.

What are the Requirements for My Student to Graduate?

    • High school students are eligible for graduation from Brightworth Academy when they have satisfied all academic requirements, as set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education, within their high school education plan (a minimum of 22 credit hours), and/or have satisfied all of the graduation requirements of their state/country of residence, have submitted required senior attendance records, and have satisfied all applicable graduation fees.
    • Parents/guardians may review and complete the 4-year high school plan, found HERE.

How Does My High School Student Recieve Credit for AP/CLEP or Dual Enrollment Courses?

    • Brightworth Academy requires an official copy of student exam results for AP/CLEP courses in order to credit those courses as such on high school transcripts. For dual enrollment courses, official transcripts from the administering college are required to credit these courses on the student’s transcripts. Please submit all required documentation to records@brightworthacademy.com.

What is Your Refund Policy?

    • Due to the amount of time and degree of work dedicated to the review of applications, processing of registration, and administration of enrollment, our annual registration and processing fee of $75 is non-transferable and non-refundable. However, applicants have until August 10th of the upcoming academic school year to receive a full refund for any paid student registration fees, should you decide to enroll your student elsewhere for the school year. After August 10th, all student registration and processing fees become non-refundable and non-transferable.
